Trashketball: A Math Facts Game

This instructionally grounded math game increases fluency in recalling math facts by the use of fast-paced drilling.

Trashketball is an educational platform video game aimed at basketball enthusiasts 6th grade and above who want to increase their math fact recall accuracy and speed for facts 0 – 12 (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division).

This instructional video game is aimed at students who may need extra enrichment at a high interest, low level.

The goal of the game is simple: gain a spot on the “All Star” trashketball team by navigating through math themed worlds. The game consists of four unique worlds, each of which differs in computational skill (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division).

As mathletes navigate their way to Trashketball tryouts they must dodge obstacles, defeat enemies, and maneuver their way to the arena where they must answer 25 math questions to gain admission to tryouts. Once in, they must shoot their collected trash into the garbage, earning points for speed and accuracy.

Players have unlimited time to shoot the trash but must beat the #1 AI opponents score on the “Hall of Fame” scoreboard to earn a spot on the team. Competitors will begin as a streetballers then will progress through the following levels on their way to All Star status: The levels include Streetballer: 0 – 3, Rookie: 0 – 6, Minor Leaguer: 0 – 9, and NBA Baller 0 – 12.

Earn 2 letters (and full credit on your journal) daily by completing your entrance (1 and 2)/exit ticket (3, 4, and 5) at the beginning and end of class BEFORE the sloth. Unscramble the letters to make a word for extra credit!

In addition to students earning points towards their grade, classes will have an opportunity to earn a party for every “100 Loves” earned.  

100 Loves=Party 

10 Likes=1 Love 

 Likes: 

  • 2 points per “perfect” behavior card 

  • 1 like per worksheet with signature at end of week 

  • 5 likes per completed journal sheet (Must have signatures/absent written on each day of the week) 

Loves

  • 1 love per complete work-packet turned in on Friday

  • 1 Love every time whole class earns all their points on their point card.
